What Is Skilled Nursing?

Skilled nursing helps to bridge the gap between medically necessary hospitalization and returning to independent living. Many people are not yet physically ready to go home once they no longer have a medical need to stay in the hospital following an injury, surgical procedure, or illness. In many cases, these patients will need physical therapy or other ongoing minor medical care before they will be fully capable of functioning without certain interventions throughout the day. Skilled nursing provides the personalized, professional support patients need to work toward being ready to go home someplace other than a regular hospital room.

Who Is Skilled Nursing For?

Skilled nursing is generally intended for patients who will be able to go home within a relatively short amount of time. Most people spend approximately 1-3 weeks in these facilities, while some with especially complex conditions may spend closer to three months with us. Our skilled nursing program focuses on setting and working toward specific, realistic rehabilitational goals that help patients reach a level of independence where we feel confident that they can safely return home. This time frame may be impacted by several factors, such as the type and severity of an injury and whether a patient will have significant support from family or need to be capable of living alone.

Why Families Choose Skilled Nursing

Our skilled nursing program takes a more comprehensive approach to helping patients return to independent living than many traditional short-term rehab programs do. We focus on both general mobility and specific tasks that patients will need to be able to do to safely live at home. This option tends to be a better fit for patients who still have medical needs throughout their recovery process. Our comprehensive facilities have plenty of on-site medical staff to significantly reduce the need to travel to other types of appointments.
