These past 11 months have been the most trying times, but especially our business of taking care of the elderly. We started off back in March not knowing what we were facing. We took direction from the local and state agencies, following strict protocol to protect our residents and staff.

We witnessed team members getting sick, many were asymptomatic and some of residents getting the virus, but we were prepared. Several of our buildings were COVID-free up until last October when the second wave hit Cincinnati and Dayton hard. We battled this invisible virus with full force.

As a family-owned company, our leadership was very responsive. They provided PPE (personal protective equipment) immediately. When testing became available through UC Health, all facilities had access to timely testing within days. Today, Caring Place facilities have a robust strategic testing program that includes testing team members twice a week and residents when potential outbreaks present themselves. The Company’s proactive approach to testing was key in helping identify positive cases and quarantine those individuals before the virus could spread to others.

In late December, a Vaccine became available for resident and health care workers in nursing facilities. Through the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care, Caring Place Facilities have hosted 8 clinics thus far and have vaccinated over 90% of its residents and over 50% of its team members. We know that many people are apprehensive about the new vaccines, but the science indicates that they are 95% effective after two doses. At Caring Place, we have simply tried to layer protection on top of protection. Screenings, PPE, testing, and vaccinations should create a path for opportunities to welcome back our family members sometime in the near future. They are missed by our residents and our team members; and they are critical to the psycho-social well-being of our residents.
